Call for Abstracts: Special Issue on 2025 Urban 20 Focused on Urban Governance

The Editorial Board of Development Southern Africa (DSA) Journal, in collaboration with the 2025 Urban20 Co-hosts – the City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg, invites scholars, researchers, policymakers, and urban practitioners to submit abstracts for a Special Issue on Urban20. This issue aims to advance knowledge and evidence-based policy solutions relevant to the evolving Urban20 (U20) agenda, focusing on urban governance.

Main theme: Urban Governance – The Evolving Urban Agenda of U20 Cities

Sub-Themes and Focus Areas:

  • Comparative Urban Governance
  • Policy Coordination and Implementation
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Social Inclusion
  • Digital Governance
  • Resilience and Crisis Management

Submission Guidelines:

  • Abstract Content: 150 words
    • Keywords: 3 to 6 keywords
    • Format: MS Word
    • Language: English

    Important Dates:

    • Call for Abstracts Opens: 6 June 2025
    • Submission of Abstracts Deadline: 30 June 2025
    • Notification of Acceptance: 31 July 2025
    • Submission of Full Paper/Manuscript: 31 December 2025
    • Review of Full Paper/Manuscript: 30 June 2026
    • Final Publication (and Launch): November 2026 (aligned with the Urban20 Summit)

    Submission Process: Submit abstracts via email to tayarisha.wsg@wits.ac.za with the subject line "Abstract Submission – Urban 20 Special Issue". All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer review.

    U20 GENERAL CONTRIBUTIONS

    Dear Partners, we appreciate your engagement in the Urban 20 (U20) 2025 Cycle and your commitment to supporting cities in shaping informed positions on key urban priorities. As previously mentioned, partners are invited to provide non-binding knowledge-based contributions (such as reports, policy briefs, and evidence-based research) to support discussions on the U20 priorities: - Economic Opportunities and Financing - Climate Action and Urban Resilience - Social Inclusion and Equity - Digital Transformation and Innovation To streamline this process, we have created a dedicated form below  where you can submit your contributions.

     To assist you, please find attached a document outlining the guidelines for submitting contributions. We encourage you to fill the form and share your insights at your earliest convenience. Your contributions will play a valuable role in shaping the discussions leading up to the U20 Summit.
